Subject Overview: |
This seminar will look at basic questions about pictorial representation from a philosophical standpoint. For example: What is a picture? How do pictures differ from other kinds of visual or nonvisual representation? What do we ‘see’ when we see a picture? What kinds of content do pictures have? And are sketches or paintings ‘pictures’ in the same sense as photographs? Focusing on recent philosophical debate, we will assess the role of factors such as resemblance, convention and recognition in answering these questions. This subject will be of particular interest to students with research interests in philosophy, visual arts and art history. |
