Non-native speakers of English may enrol without sitting for a placement test but may be recommended to other subjects during the first two weeks of the semester depending on their English language proficiency. Native or near-native speakers of English or students who have completed ESLA10004 Academic English 2 are not eligible to enrol.

Through the study of multiculturalism in Australian society, this subject develops students' ability to use academic English language. The subject is specifically designed for students who require intensive attention to their academic writing development. Its primary focus is on developing students' ability to structure an academic paper, develop an argument, make effective use of citations and draw conclusions. A range of other academic abilities are also developed such as critical thinking, effective reading, participation in small group work and oral presentations.

Students who complete this subject will:

• write academic assignments fluently, accurately and appropriately
• analyse academic texts purposively and critically
• speak effectively in academic settings
• participate actively in groupwork
• develop an understanding of the development of Australia as a multicultural society
• synthesise and organise material from spoken and written sources

• 600 word summarydue in week 4 [15%]
• 800 word summaries and synthesis due in week 7 [20%]
• 600 word equivalent oral presentation due in weeks 7-11 [15%]
• 800 word essay outline with introduction and conclusion due in week 9 [20%]
• 1200 word essay due in week 13 [30%]

Students will be required to purchase a Subject Reader prepared by the coordinator.
