English Language - 200 Point Program

The English Language specialisation is part of Master of Applied Linguistics.

Student who complete the Master of Applied Linguistics should:

• acquire advanced understanding of concepts, current issues and research methods in core areas of applied linguistics;
• complete a focused piece of research if undertaking the Minor Thesis elective;
• gain specialist knowledge and research techniques in their chosen Specialisation.

200 point program

Duration: 2 years full-time / up to 4 years part-time

The Master of Applied Linguistics (English Language) 200 point program requires:

Coursework Only Option:

• four core subjects (50 points) (one undergraduate core subject in the first 100 points for the program, at least one graduate core subject from List A and at least two graduate core subjects from List B)
• twelve elective subjects (150 points) ( up to three which can be undergraduate subjects which must be taken in the first 100 points of the program)

or

Minor Thesis Option:

• four core subjects (50 points) (one undergraduate core subject in the first 100 points for the program, at least one graduate core subject from List A and at least two graduate core subjects from List B)
• nine elective subjects (112.5 points) (up to three which can be undergraduate subjects which must be taken in the first 100 points of the program)
• LING90010 Minor Thesis (25 points)
• LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics (12.5 points)

Please note: students taking LING90010 Minor Thesis should have completed or be concurrently enrolled in LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics.

Capstone Requirement:

All students are required to complete the Capstone Requirement for the program (25 points). Students must complete the relevant capstone option for their specialisation -

Capstone Stream 1: LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics (12.5 points) or LING90005 Quantitative Methods in Language Studies (12.5 points) and LING90018 (12.5 points) Sociolinguistics and Language Learning or LING90019 English in a Globalised World (12.5 points)

Purpose: An opportunity to integrate knowledge and research skills within the English Language specialisation

Minor Thesis Subjects

• LING90010 Minor Thesis (25 points)
• LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics (12.5 points)

Please note: students taking LING90010 Minor Thesis should do so in the final semester of their program and must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics.

Undergraduate Elective Subjects

Maximum of three undergraduate elective subjects as part of their first 100 points of the program.

Graduate Elective Subjects

Maximum of nine graduate elective subejcts
