TESOL - 200 Point Program

The TESOL specialisation is part of the Master of Applied Linguistics.

Student who complete the Master of Applied Linguistics should:

• Acquire advanced understanding of concepts, current issues and research methods in core areas of applied linguistics
• Complete a focused piece of research if undertaking the Minor Thesis elective
• Gain specialist knowledge and research techniques in their chosen Specialisation

200 point program

Duration: 2 years full-time / up to 4 years part-time

The Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) 200 point program requires:

Coursework Only Option

• one compulsory subject (12.5 points)
• one undergraduate core subject (12.5 points) (must be completed in the first 100 points of the program)
• two graduate core subjects (25 points)
• twelve elective subjects (150 points) (up to three can be undergraduate elective subjects which must be taken in the first 100 points of the program)

or

Minor Thesis Option

• one compulsory subject (12.5 points)
• one undergraduate core subject (12.5 points) (must be completed in the first 100 points of the program)
• two graduate core subjects (25 points)
• minor thesis subject LING90010 (25 points)
• LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics (12.5 points)
• nine elective subjects (112.5 points) (up to three can be undergraduate elective subjects which must be taken in the first 100 points of the program)

Please note: students taking LING90010 Minor Thesis should do so in the final semester of their program and must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics

Capstone Requirement:

All students are required to complete the Capstone Requirement for the program (25 points). Students must complete the relevant capstone option for their specialisation -

Capstone Stream 2: LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics (12.5 points) or LING90005 Quantitative Methods in Language Studies (12.5 points) and LING90012 Second Language Acquisition (12.5 points)

Purpose: An opportunity to integrate knowledge and research skills within the TESOL specialisation

Maximum of three undergraduate elective subjects (37.5 points) as part of their first 100 points in the program

Graduate Elective Subjects

Maximum of nine graduate elective subjects (112.5 points)
