This subject enables students to develop their interpretation of the operatic aria culminating in a concert performance of two arias. Students will study the vocal, stylistic and linguistic characterisations of their allocated/selected arias, and examine examples of outstanding historical performances of the selected works. It is expected that students will attend relevant concerts throughout the semester.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• perform a group of operatic arias to concert standard;
• demonstrate artistic maturity in the preparation and performance of these arias;
• display a level of vocal craft appropriate to the level of repertoire presented;
• demonstrate skills in recital/concert presentation and performance evaluation;
• articulate and communicate an informed historical understanding of the development of the aria.

Presentation of two solo arias at an end of semester concert performance in week 12 (85%); 5 minute oral presentation, prior to performance, describing the historical context of the arias (15%).

100% attendance is expected, less than 80% will result in a fail in the subject.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• study selected repertoire to performance standard ;
• demonstrate the capacity for critical and independent thought and reflection;
• demonstrate analytical skills in the context of performance;
• plan effectively to meet performance deadlines.
