Subject Overview:

This subject introduces the world of the creative songwriter in broad ranging musical genres. The subject will present and discuss the various nuances including story telling, poetry, eloquent and stimulating lyric writing, development in conjunction with melody, advance harmonic and rhythmic development, world styles, form, structure, arranging techniques, in turn engaging the participant in further development and challenging artistic pathways.

The Creative Songwriter is delivered in two parts: lecture and workshop. The lecture is taught in a large group format and will concentrate on exploring the songwriter’s creative pathways, examining style (lyrical and musical), melodic and chordal breadth, as well as genre and form structure/arrangement. The workshop will give participants a forum to present, perform, discuss and further develop their original compositions.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this subject students should

  • Develop an appreciation and understanding of the advanced skills in creative songwriting;
  • Understand lyric and story and its important role in creative songwriting;
  • Understand form and structure as applied to songwriting;
  • Have developed skills to partake in creative songwriting developments.
Assessment:

Completion of individual set tasks throughout the semester. Equivalent 1,600 words/
Due throughout the semester. Worth 40%.

Completion and submission of an original composition which highlights an engaging lyric, a sophisticated and stimulating melodic and chordal structure, as well as a noteworthy band arrangement developed throughout the semester, based on class materials presented.
Duration: 5 minutes. Equivalent 2,400 words. Due during the assessment period. Worth 60%.

Hurdle requirements: Students must attend 80% of all scheduled classes and attempt all elements of assessment to be eligible for a pass in this subject.
