Subject Overview:

This subject critically examines the core concepts, ideas and beliefs that inform our understanding of what organisations are, what they do, and how we manage them. This involves combining cultural, historical, sociological, and philosophical approaches to the theoretical and practical issues of organisation and management to answer the following questions: What are 'organisations'? What do we know about organisations? How do we know it? Topics to be covered include the history of management ideas; established approaches to organisation and management theory as well as contemporary trends in management ideas; and alternative approaches to organisation and management theory such as cultural anthropology, discourse analysis, and theories of the organisational subject.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the subject students should understand and be able to:
• Explain the historical and intellectual antecedents of management as an academic discipline
• Analyse the role of theory in this disciplines, especially the relationship between theory, management research and practice
• Evaluate the influence of a diverse range of disciplinary perspectives on this body of theory
• Explain the practical and conceptual implications of contemporary and historical approaches to management theory

Assessment:

A take home end of semester examination (60%), individual assignments totaling not more than 3000 words due at regular intervals during the semester (30%), a group presentation taking place during the semester depending on the topic chosen (10%).
