Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Four hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment:

4 contact hours per week, 6 additional hours per week. Total 120 hours per semester.

Prerequisites:

JAPN10006/JAPN20004/JAPN30006 Japanese 8 or equivalent.

Subject Overview:

This subject aims to familiarise students with colloquial and dialectal expressions used in Japan. It introduces students to various styles of Japanese spoken by those differentiated by gender and region. It will also give students opportunities to examine different registers in various conversation settings. In class, students will view DVDs and analyse various types of conversations. Students will practice speaking in appropriate styles depending on the situation. Students who complete this subject should have acquired good knowledge of the diverse range of Japanese language practice.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students will be able to:

  • understand various styles of Japanese.
  • use a variety of styles, appropriate on the situation.
  • read articles on various styles of Japanese in Japanese.
Assessment:

In-class presentation of 600 words (due mid semester) 15%, oral test of 600 words (due end of semester) 15%, project involving writing tasks of 800 words (due throughout the semester) 20% and a final examination (during the examination period) 50%. Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
