Subject Overview:

This subject examines the role of English as an agent of globalisation. Topics include theories, conceptions and metaphors of globalisation, the economics and politics of globalisation, English as a hegemonic influence globally, English and the international media, globalism and identity, and global culture and global communities are they illusory?

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • understand the major debates around globalisation;
  • be aware of how English is implicated in the processes of globalisation;
  • understand the role of international media in globalisation; and
  • critically evaluate the implications of particular uses of language in a global context.
Assessment:

Essay 1: 1,500 words (40 per cent) due week 7

Essay 2: 2,500 words (60 per cent) due week 14
