Time Commitment: Contact Hours: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour textual study class per week.
Total Time Commitment:

3 contact hours per week, 6 additional hours per week. Total of 108 hours per semester.

Prerequisites:

CHIN10018/CHIN20004 Chinese 6 and one of CHIN20006/CHIN30011 Great Chinese Classics or CHIN20005/CHIN30010 Modern Chinese Literature.

Subject Overview:

In this subject students will learn to translate from Chinese to English and English to Chinese. The selection of texts will be limited to modern literature and to documents and news items on politics and international affairs. In their translations students will learn to focus on accuracy as well as stylistic appropriateness and will be encouraged to submit both individual and group work.

Learning Outcomes:
  • acquire skills to explicate complex materials written in another language.
  • be able to present complex information accurately and fluently in writing.
  • appreciate the complexity of translating concepts from one system into another.
Assessment:

One written translation totalling 1500 words 35% (due in week 8), a final project totalling 2500 words 50% (due during the examination period) and an in-class test 15%. Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
