Overview:

The masters program allows students to combine coursework with extensive independent research in history. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research. Candidates may advance to the Doctor of Philosophy degree after successful completion of the masters or may apply to convert to the PhD at an earlier stage. An honours grade of at least H3 (65%) average must be attained in the respective thesis and advanced seminar components of the course to qualify for the award of the masters degree.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete the Master of Arts (Advanced Seminar & Shorter Thesis) in this area of specialisation should:

  • demonstrate a sound understanding of the main developments in past and contemporary historical theory;
  • understand the issues involved in debates about historical knowledge;
  • demonstrate a capacity for articulating historical questions and the appropriate methodologies for investigating them;
  • exhibit a familiarity with relevant historiography and an ability to locate their research within that literature;
  • express research findings in lucid, effective prose, which uses appropriate historical conventions of documentation.

Duration: 1.5 years full-time / 3 years part-time
