Subject Overview: This subject provides advanced study of a particular field of economics. Students will normally select a field of study from a pre-determined set of options although, subject to the availability of suitable academic resources, requests to study other fields will be considered by the Program Director. The exact content of the subject will be determined by the Program Director in consultation with the Head of Department and teaching staff, taking into account the specific interests and needs of individual students together with the available teaching resources.
Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students will have sufficient command of the subject area to successfully undertake original research in that field of economics.

Assessment:

Assessment tasks specific to the individual content are to be contracted between the student, the lecturer(s) responsible for delivery of the subject material, and the Program Director. This will typically be comprised of some assignments/exercises and a major essay. The overall assessment will be equivalent to a 10,000 word essay.

  • the ability to critically assess contributions to the literature;
  • the skills needed to formulate and analyse models used in that field of economics;
  • the capability to prepare and present original research papers in that field.
