This subject requires students to study and research construction and conservation methods of timber buildings and Gateways in Southern China, and to produce drawings and writings highlighting details of such buildings. Students are also required to produce virtual displays highlighting the chosen gateway, and possible alternatives, in their potential contexts.

As well as the above students will be required to spend at least three hours a week in the construction workshop producing a full-size timber gateway that will be erected, initially, adjacent to the workshop

On completion students should have a clear understanding of the construction techniques of southern Chinese timber gateways and knowledge of the requirements and methods of their conservation.

Gateway model, group work due week 2 - 10%.

Computer context modelling on A3 sheet, individual work due week 8 – 10%.

Journal covering construction and research topic, individual work equivalent to 2000 words, due 7th June - 40%.

Involvement in the construction and documenting of a full size timber gateway, group work throughout semester – 40%.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.
