Subject Overview:

An original research project will be conducted and a thesis of 12,000-15,000 words completed under academic supervision. Data collection: each student will be encouraged to develop and plan a project during Year 1. Topics may reflect their own interest or relate to current research at the clinical genetics service (Genetic Health Services Victoria) or the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI) where the Masters will be taught. Students will be assigned a supervisor and start to collect data during their clinical placement or through other relevant sources eg the health care system.

This is supplemented by study in existing short courses and online resources (eg www.courseworks.unimelb.edu.au) offered through The University of Melbourne, as appropriate to required skills.

Objectives:
  • To conduct an original research project relevant to the practice of genetic counselling.
  • To develop familiarity with and appreciation of the research process.
  • To consider the implications of findings for genetic counselling practice.
Assessment:
  • A thesis of 12,000 - 15,000 words on an approved topic (90%), due early November. The thesis will be assessed by two examiners chosen from the Board of Examiners (Program Convener, Research Curriculum Coordinator and External Examiner), and a mark awarded. In order to pass the dissertation students will be required to undertake and pass a 15-minute Viva (hurdle requirement).
  • A 15-minute presentation on the findings of the study (5%), held at the end of the second semester, which will be assessed by the Program Convenor, Research Curriculum Coordinator, and one external examiner.
  • The primary supervisor will assign a mark for the thesis (5%) using a standard format to assess development of the student's reasoning, analytical, organisational and written skills.
