Students will undertake this subject as fully participating members of the Victorian Opera Company at its rehearsal and performance studios located at Horti Hall in Victoria Street, Melbourne. Through involvement with Victorian Opera in principal roles as appropriate, students will be involved in further developing a variety of advanced operatic skills, knowledge and understandings though rehearsals and practical workshops that will include vocal coaching, acting, stagecraft and movement training, role development and characterisation, and ensemble work. Students will receive thorough technical and artistic training to cope with all stylistic demands of their singing voice and develop a practical knowledge of repertoire covering all major styles of opera. Involvement in performing a principal role in one of Victorian Opera’s productions will facilitate a capstone experience for students.

On completion of the subject, students will be able to:

• demonstrate professional level skills in vocal production, in acting, stagecraft and movement, and in the interpretation of major principal roles as appropriate;
• demonstrate understanding and application of the principles of opera production relevant to their roles within a fully professional opera company;
• perform within the chorus and minor principal roles with technical and musical capability; and
• demonstrate a knowledge of the history, stylistic conventions and interpretive framework of the operas constituting the Victorian Opera’s productions during the semester.

50%: Continuous assessment of studio based work. Assessment throughout the semester but including formal monthly individual feedback to each student.

25%: Individual personal professional journals. End of the semester.

25%: Assessment of a minor or major principal role in a Victorian Opera production (Capstone experience 1). End of the semester..
