Subject Overview:

On completion of this subject, students will be able to analyse short pieces using various methods of analysis, including linear analysis, and will have formed a critical perspective of the variety of analytical techniques available.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • apply advanced analytic methods to the analysis of tonal and atonal music;

  • evaluate a number of approaches to the analysis of western tonal classical music; and

  • articulate ways of understanding the cultural context of, and ramifications for, the development of western music analysis.

Assessment:

Regular analysis exercises (70%); end-of-semester project of 1600 words or equivalent (30%) due during the examination period.
