Subject Overview: In this process-oriented project, students will have the opportunity to put into practice their learning from the three principle skills areas of singing, acting and dancing in combination within a small-scale performance context. Implicit in this is the requirement to autonomously maintain technique in two or more areas, whilst remaining responsive to creative impulse and relationship. The work may include ensemble and small group work and will require students to balance the demands of dramatic, musical and choreographic directorial input.
Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a developing understanding of the demands of each of the three core disciplines of music theatre individually and in combination;
  • demonstrate a developing autonomous working process to support work in the rehearsal room through external rehearsal and preparation that is both sound technically and artistically whilst remaining flexible to change within rehearsal;
  • understand the demands and challenges of working with a creative team comprising a director, music director and choreographer;
  • demonstrate a developing ability to synthesise the three core disciplines of music theatre and to understand their impact on and relationship to each other for holistic music theatre performance;
  • demonstrate the ability to work constructively as a member of an ensemble.
Assessment:

Continuous: based on participation, preparation and progress in rehearsals and actively supportive contribution to the ensemble throughout semester (60%)

Formal: based on performances at the ocnclusion of the project (20%)

Written: self-assessment process and performance based on a journal detailing experiences in rehearsal, external preparation and progress towards personal artistic objectives to be submitted at the end of semester (1,500 words) (20%)

Upon completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • practice a high level of skill in the three major skill areas of singing, acting and dance, both individually and in combination;
  • recognise their uniqueness as a performer and maintain that integrity whilst developing diversity;
  • practise their craft with autonomy, confidence, self-awareness and self-motivation;
  • synthesise the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to the various requirements of genre and style in diverse range of Music Theatre practice.
