Subject Overview:

This subject comprises Community Dental Health, Periodontics, Cariology and Prevention.

Community Dental Health covers the diversity of institutions involved in the delivery of dental care in Australia, particularly Victoria, and issues related to the dental workforce. It also covers the application of the behavioural sciences to the management of common psychological and psychosocial features encountered in dental practice.

Periodontics covers the treatment of moderate to severe periodontal cases following on from treatment undertaken in earlier years and integrates periodontics into other restorative disciplines. Treatment planning of the periodontal patient using cases and the student's patients is also addressed.

Cariology and Prevention covers the primary prevention of dental caries and the further management of caries in dental patients with an emphasis on caries risk and management of patients with a dry mouth.


Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should:

(1) Comprehend/understand:

a) the diversity of factors associated with the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease and the potential for their control;

b) the delivery and evaluation of dental care in both public and private sectors;and

c) the relationship between oral and general health in elderly persons, and the role of the dental profession in the advocacy of health for all including elderly persons.

(2) Have developed:

a) the communication and psychomotor skills necessary for providing total patient care in a general dental practice setting;

b) skills in:

· critical listening and case presentation;

· promotion of oral care, in particular sports injuries to the mouth;and

c) an awareness of the importance of total patient care;

(3) Appreciate:

a) the concept and practice of ongoing total patient care in the prevention, identification, assessment and treatment of oral diseases - as opposed to the episodic management of symptomatic oral problems;

b) the concept and practice of maintaining oral health; and

c) an awareness of the range of differing dental health care needs of individuals and groups within the community and the diversity of the methods needed to provide them.

Assessment:

  • One 3-hour written examination covering community dental health, periodontics, cariology and prevention at the end of Semester 2 . (35%)
  • Continuing written assessment in community dental health throughout the year and continuing clinical assessment in periodontics throughout the year. (15%)
  • An integrated multiple station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) of no more than 25 minutes at the end of Semester 1 to be held in conjunction with an OSCE in each of Oral Rehabilitation, Child and Adolescent Dental Health and Oral Medicine and Surgery. (15%)
  • One 30-minute case presentation of a periodontal patient treated throughout the year, to be held at the end of Semester 2. (35%)
