Subject Overview:

This subject provides an introduction to the use of prefabrication in construction, from materials and elements to whole buildings, at various scales and levels of complexity. Benefits and challenges of prefabrication are highlighted through a series of case studies and site visits. The subject also covers current international advancements in prefabricated construction.

  • To build a critical appreciation for off-site construction approaches.
  • To analyse and compare the different procurement approaches used in prefabricated construction against conventional construction practices.
  • To develop an awareness of the latest international developments in prefabricated construction.
  • Class participation (10%).
  • Case study (20%) of 1,000 words, due mid-semester.
  • Professional report (45%) of 2,500 words, due at the end of semester.
  • Class presentation (25%) of 15 minutes, due in the second half of semester.
