Subject Overview: The course will explore health issues surrounding the experience of violence by women and will look at child abuse, domestic violence and adult sexual assault. The first part will examine existing research on women and violence and the difficulties in establishing accurate prevalence rates. These difficulties will be compared and contrasted with the barriers that exist for health workers in effectively dealing with issues surrounding violence. The second part subject will focus on the health consequences of the experience of violence on women. Links between previous child abuse and the development of psychopathology will be explored as well as the way women present to health workers with effects of domestic violence and adult sexual assault. The third and final section will look at the different management strategies in use for dealing with victims of violence. The development of these methods through the health disciplines will be explored as well as their relative effectiveness.

Students who successfully complete this subject should have:

• An in depth understanding of how the experience of gender based violence impacts on women’s physical, psychological andsocial well being
• Enhanced critical thinking skills
• Developed advanced written and oral communication skills
• Developed the ability to recognize the presentation of complicated comorbid health conditions in diverse health settings that are associated with gender based violence
• A sophisticated understanding of different approaches for overcoming barriers health workers face in dealing with the health issues related to violence and abuse
• An advanced appreciation of the particular ethical concerns related to patient safety, privacy and confidentiality and strategies for ensuring these are maintained in both research and clinical practice with women affected by gender based violence
