Subject Overview:

This course is no longer taking new enrolments. The last intake into this program was Semester 2, 2009.

This subject will examine the risks and benefits of echocardiography in perioperative medicine. The use of echocardiography within disciplines of perioperative medicine will be outlined in great detail. Uses in cardiac surgery, trauma, vascular surgery, other non-cardiac surgery, and in intensive care will be illustrated using a case scenario approach. The identification of the basic haemodynamic state, and hybrids of haemodynamic abnormality will be explored in great detail. Pericardial disease and assessment of tamponade will be included in the subject.
Objectives: • Subject Objectives:
o on completion of this subject, students should;
o appreciate the risks and benefits of echocardiography in perioperative medicine
o understand applications of echocardiography within the disciplines of cardiac surgery, trauma, vascular surgery, non-cardiac surgery, in emergency medicine, and in intensive care.
o Integrated knowledge from previous subjects evaluating real-life case scenario within the fields of perioperative medicine.
o Identify the haemodynamic state during case scenarios, and identify hybrids of abnormality.
o Understand and assess conditions causing pericardial constraint and tamponade
Assessment: Open book multiple choice question exam 50 questions per subject (80%). Self assessment modules in the workbooks (20%). The University reserves the right to review these worksheets if there are any doubts about the authenticity of the students work, or to monitor student progress.

o George L and colleagues. West Mead anaesthetic department transoesophageal echocardiography training manual.
Recommended Texts: Other materials will be provided as a package of readings, PowerPoint presentations, case studies and assessment tasks

Generic Skills: This subject encompasses particular generic skills. On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
  • Integrate knowledge from previous subjects and from scientific literature evaluation to identify and understand applications of echocardiography in clinical practice.
  • Improve their capacity to manage competing demands on time, and professional focus in clinical practice. How to manage the constraints of providing anaesthesia or specialised care to critically ill patients, yet at the same time providing advanced diagnostic information with echocardiography.
  • Improve "thinking skills" when considering new approaches haemodynamic evaluation in critically ill patients.
