Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Candidates will receive regular individual supervision as mutually agreed between the student and the supervisor. Students may be required to write regular reports on the progress of their research. (It is sometimes possible to arrange joint or associate supervision for candidates wishing to take graduate study in an area involving two disciplines).

Subject Overview: Students undertake a research project and prepare a thesis. The thesis topic must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee and any variation to the topic must be approved by the Committee. The thesis may be presented as:
A study of approximately 30,000-50,000 words (including footnotes, excluding words in tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices) embodying the results of significant research.
OR
A transcription and edition of a substantial body of music together with a critical study of between 10,000-20,000 words on the music edited.
Objectives: To undertake a research project and prepare a thesis. The thesis topic must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee and any variation to the topic must be approved by the Committee. The thesis may be presented as:
A study of approximately 30,000-50,000 words (including footnotes, excluding words in tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices) embodying the results of significant research.
OR
A transcription and edition of a substantial body of music together with a critical study of between 10,000-20,000 words on the music edited.
Assessment: Candidates must submit within the period of candidature three copies of the thesis for examination pursuant to Statute 12.5.1.
