Subject Overview: This subject will explore the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The principles of diabetes care will be explored with a focus on the scope of practice of the nurse providing clinical care, psychosocial support and education within a multidisciplinary framework.
Objectives:

At the completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes
  • Identify the risk factors associated with Type 2 diabetes
  • Contribute to the prevention, screening, and diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes
  • Educate patients in self management of Type 2 diabetes
  • Develop multidisciplinary management plans for patients with Type 2 diabetes within the primary health care setting
Assessment:
  • Two 1,000 word case studies due mid semester (40%)
  • Structured review of medical records equivalent to 500 words due end of semester (20% hurdle requirement)
  • 2,000 word written assignment due end of semester (40%)
  • Reflective journal due end of semester (Pass/fail hurdle requirement)

Students must achieve a cumulative mark of at least 50% and a pass in both the clinical hurdle requirements in order to pass the subject.
