Subject Overview: This subject will explore the concepts of ecological processes that regulate native and exotic faunal populations in Australia. We will investigate techniques used to monitor and manage faunal populations that are at risk; current methods of control and harvesting techniques; and fauna legislation and regulation which protect and enhance populations. Case studies and field trips will be used to validate the above points.
Objectives:

At the completion of the this subject students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge of animal management, including methods of control and techniques that can be implemented to enhance threatened populations;
  • understand the social, historical and environmental context of animal management;
  • describe issues of fauna management in appropriate technical language;
  • access and appreciate national and international debates regarding fauna management;
  • apply critical and analytical skills and methods to identity and solve problems in fauna management.
Assessment:
  • 2 hour exam – 60%
  • 1 essay – 1500 words each – 10% - Due mid semester
  • 1 major assignment (Development of an action plan) – 3500 words – 30%. Due end of semester
