Subject Overview: This subject will introduce a framework for understanding and developing leadership in schools, business and the community. Topics will include: Vision and goal-setting; communicating and collaborating; creating productive environments; effective planning; leadership, equity and respect; leading for liberation; change management, sources of institutional personal power; leadership and self reflection. the relationship of leadership to teaching will be a recurrent theme.
Objectives:

iOn completion of this subject, Associates should be able to:

  • understand the major elements of effective leadership;
  • understand the significance of leadership in producing innovation and change;
  • understand the need for mutual respect in leader/follower relationships;
  • develop strategies for negotiating outcomes with those they may be leading;
  • reflect on their own present and potential identity as a leader;
  • relate the concept of leadership to effective teaching.
Assessment:

A 15000 word action plan for dealing with a school issue requiring leadership (75%)

A 500 word reflection on the process of producing the action plan (25%).

Both pieces of assessment are due in the examination period.
