Core Participation Requirements: Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.

Subject Overview: While there are core principles that apply to all university teaching contexts, particular teaching environments are distinguished in terms of the priorities, teaching and learning practices, and the challenges associated with them. Some specialist environments are associated with 'place', such as clinical, work-integrated and online teaching and learning. Others may be distinguished by the nature of the student cohort (eg. graduate teaching; research supervision) or the disciplinary context (eg. interdisciplinary teaching). This subject examines the distinguishing characteristics of such environments, and enables participants to focus on the environments of most relevance to their own teaching.
Objectives:

At the completion of the subject, participants should have developed:

  • A conceptual framework for considering the distinguishing features of teaching and learning environments;
  • Knowledge of the history and development of a specialist tertiary teaching environment of their choice;
  • An ability to analyse their chosen environment in terms of core educational principles;
  • Skills in teaching in their chosen environment, including curriculum design and assessment.
Assessment:
  • A hurdle requirement of a project proposal (Due early in semester)
  • Written report of 2,000 words (30 per cent, due mid semester)
  • Written report or portfolio of 5,000 words or equivalent (70 per cent, due end of semester)
