Subject Overview: This subject further develops English language competency in the four macro skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening across a range of academic and professional usages. Topics include developing reading strategies for different purposes, writing for different purposes and audiences, analysing and producing a variety of written and spoken genres, analysing a variety of academic and professional discourses, utilising appropriate academic or professional discourses in written and spoken texts, synthesising information from different sources and managing interpersonal and group interactions.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • understand and use appropriate reading and writing strategies for different purposes;
  • be able to analyse and use a variety of academic and professional genres and discourses;
  • synthesise information from a range of sources;
  • understand the dynamics of interpersonal and group interactions.
Assessment: Essay 1 (cause and effect structure): 1,000 words (15 per cent) due week 4

Group Seminar: 1,500 words equivalent (20 per cent) due weeks 1 - 9

Essay 2 (compare and contrast structure): 1,000 words (15 per cent) due week 7

Essay 3 (argumentative): 2,000 words (25 per cent) due week 11

Seminar Presentation: 2,500 words equivalent (25 per cent) due week 14
