Time Commitment: Contact Hours: A 2.5-hour seminar per week
Total Time Commitment: 2.5 contact hours/week , 6.0 additional hours/week. Total of 8.5 hours per week.
Prerequisites: ARBC10006 Arabic 1B or equivalent.
Corequisites: ARBC10001 Arabic 2A or ARBC20004 Arabic 2A.

Subject Overview:

This subject aims to heighten general awareness of the Arabic language and to enhance the acquisition of Arabic, particularly in aural and oral communication skills as well as to enhance student's sociocultural awareness of the Arab world. Students will be introduced to characteristics of communication strategies, and sociocultural aspects of the Arabic language. On completion of this subject, students should be able to conduct everyday conversations and manage classroom communication in Arabic with greater sociocultural awareness.

Objectives:
  • Further develop students' awareness of the Arabic language and to enhance their acquisition of Arabic, particularly in aural and oral communication skills;
  • introduce students to a range of communication strategies, and sociocultural aspects of the Arabic language.
  • heighten sociocultural awareness when communicating in Arabic.
Assessment:

A take-home test in Arabic 15% (due week 7), an essay of 1000 words in English or Arabic 15% (due at the end of the semester), class presentations in pairs 20% (throughout the semester) and a 30-minute aural/oral test 50% (during the examination period).

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
