Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 2 hour seminar per week

Subject Overview: Spanish-language fiction (literature and film) after World War II has achieved unprecedented worldwide recognition for both its combination of „high‟ and „popular‟ art forms and its ability to speak to global audiences from an utterly recognisable local perspective. In this course we will seek to understand some of the major names and trends in contemporary fiction from the Hispanic world (including masters such as Borges, Garcia Marquez and Vargas Llosa, as well as acclaimed filmmakers such as Pedro Almodovar and Guillermo del Toro) in their respective national and cultural contexts.
Objectives:
  • To identify and contextualise the most relevant canonical fiction writers and directors in the contemporary Hispanic world;
  • To read in depth the most significant texts in this tradition;
  • To critically analyse each author‟s contribution to national, transnational and global cultural debates;
  • To continue to expand Spanish-language reading and writing skills.
Assessment:

A mid-semester in-class written test 25% (1 hour). an end of semester written test 25% (1 hour). a 1,500 word essay 40% due in the examination period. tutorial participation 10%.

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
