Subject Overview: This fieldwork subject requires students to complete the second 35 days of the second agency-based field placement required within the MSW degree. The goal of this placement is to develop a more consolidated and advanced level of assessment and intervention skill in preparation for post-qualifying practice. The placement occurs as an intensive learning experience, outside of the coursework timetable.
Objectives:

The goal of this placement is to develop a consolidated and advanced level of assessment and intervention skill in preparation for post-qualifying practice. Students should be able to demonstrate:

  • Advanced level practice and intervention skills, including the application of relevant theoretical frameworks to social work practice.
  • A capacity to critically evaluate practice.
  • Skills of working in an organisation, including an understanding of the social work role and agency system and the way in which this shapes practice.
  • Professional identity and professional values in practice, including an ability to evaluate practice and analyse the ethical tensions in practice.
  • The effective use of supervision to enhance learning.
  • Advanced skills in written and oral communication including the ability work collaboratively with peers across a range of tasks.
  • Their knowledge of diversity in planning responsive, culturally sensitive interventions.
  • An ability to apply strategies of advocacy and social change.
  • An understanding of the socio-political context of practice and how social policy influences this locally and globally.
  • An ability to integrate the techniques of practice research into assessment and intervention.
  • An ability to undertake practice research including case and program evaluation.
Assessment:
  1. A hurdle requirement of 100% attendance at field placement and 1 x 3 hour university-based integration seminars totalling 35 days.
  2. A 3,000 word practice portfolio and report assessed on a pass/fail basis. The portfolio is developed throughout the duration of the placement, and is due at the end of semester.
