Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 36 hours: attendance at a half-day research training skills workshop (week 1 of semester), approximately fortnightly supervisor meetings, attendance at a half-day session of student presentations (week 5), attendance at two full day sessions for student oral presentations (week 11).

Prerequisites:

Students must complete POPH90068 and either POPH90069, POPH90070

In addition, students enrolling in a social sciences Research Project in Sexual Health must also enrol in:
POPH90200 (may be taken concurrently)

Alternatively, students enrolling in an epidemiology Research Project in Sexual Health must also enrol in:
POPH90146, POPH90147 (may be taken concurrently). Plus other MPH subjects that are relevant to the proposed research topic.

Students entering the MPH from 2011 must have a weighted average mark of at least 70% for all relevant subjects to be eligible to enrol in the research project. Successful research project applicants will be selected on the basis of academic merit.

Subject Overview:

Students will develop a research question in the discipline of sexual health and attempt to answer the question either by a systematic review of the published and unpublished literature or by the analysis of an existing data set, or by the development of a research protocol.

Objectives: At the end of this subject, students are expected to be able to:
  • Develop a research question that can be addressed by analysing existing data or by developing an appropriate research protocol
  • Justify the research question using available evidence
  • Summarise, analyse and interpret research findings
  • Write reports suitable for use by public health practitioners or write manuscripts for publication
Assessment:

A 15 minute work in progress oral presentation due during the fifth week of semester (10%); a 30 minute final oral presentation due during the 11th week of the semester (20%); a written submission, suitable for publication of between 5,000 and 8,000 words, due during the examination period (70%). Students must pass the written research report (hurdle).
