The subject is comprised of two sections:

Section 1 – Oral Surgery & Diagnosis
• Local anaesthesia and exodontia
• Surgical removal of teeth
• Surgical removal of third molars
• Osteoradionecrosis
• Medications and dentistry
• Prescription writing
• Intra and extra oral lesions
• Diagnosis
• Management of oral pathology
• Temporomandibular joint disorders
• Oro-facial pain
• Haematological diseases

Section 2 – Oral Radiology
• Terminology
• Techniques and types
• Radiographic interpretation
• Safety
• Radiation Regulation and authorities
• Film vs digital radiology
Objectives:

The subject objectives for each of the sections are:

Section 1 – Oral Surgery & Diagnosis
1. to demonstrate the methodology of exodontia and minor oral surgery practice
2. to assess the degree of difficulty of patients requiring exodontia or oral surgical procedure
3. to be able to select the appropriate instruments, surgical technique for treating a patient and predict the likely outcome and complications
4. to manage the pain associated with exodontia and minor oral surgery treatment
5. to practice exodontia and minor oral surgery under local analgesia
6. to describe the principles of informed patient consent
7. to demonstrate the necessary skills to refer a patient to a Consultant (including for medical assessment) prior to minor oral surgery and exodontia
8. to apply the principles of general surgery, diagnosis and treatment planning to the treamtent of patients requiring exodontics and oral and maxillofacial
9. to interpret the collected data and make a clinical diagnosis
10. to recognise stress and be able to use strategies to manage stress

Section 2 – Oral Radiology
1. to interpret the collected data and make a clinical diagnosis
2. to assess intra-oral and peri-oral soft tissue structures for pathology
3. to use all laboratory equipment efficiently and within health and safety guidelines.
Assessment:

Assessment for Section 1 – Oral Surgery & Diagnosis (50% of total marks for the subject)
• End-of-semester clinical practice exam in exodontia clinic including viva voce (25%);
• End-of-semester 2 hour written examination (25%).

Assessment for Section 2 – Oral Radiology (50% of total marks for the subject)
• End-of-semester clinical practice exam in radiology clinic including a viva voce (25%);
• End-of-semester 1 hour written examination (25%)
