Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Four hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment: 4 contact hours/week , 8 additional hours/week. Total of 12 hours per week.
Prerequisites: CHIN20003 Chinese 3A or equivalent.
Corequisites: None.

Subject Overview:

This subject will further develop the range of student's listening and speaking skills. expand their experience of Chinese prose styles. and improve their ability to communicate in written Chinese.
Objectives:
  • be able to function in Chinese in a wider range of formal situations.
  • be able to make short speeches in Chinese on a wider range of topics.
  • have the basic skills to deal with a number of areas in written business correspondence.
  • develop skills in reading and translating modern Chinese prose.
  • become acquainted with some important aspects of contemporary and historical Chinese culture.
  • acquire information from written and aural sources outside one".s own cultural realm, and be able to discuss that information in the communicative code in which it was originally produced.
  • be able to express oneself while following the norms of a complex communicative code.
  • and increase awareness of social issues while discussing them with an understanding of their cultural context.
Assessment:

Short tests and/or assignments 10% (commencing 2nd week and before the end of semester), an oral test 20% (during the examination period), a listening and comprehension test 20% (during the examination period), a 2-hour final examination 40% (during the examination period) and continuous class participation 10%.

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
