Subject Overview:

The focus of clinical skills 2 is for students to be familiar with a broad knowledge of clinical paediatrics and basic and clinical sciences. In addition there will be an emphasis placed on the application of this knowledge to the care of the sick child and their family. The areas of communication, decision making, preventive medicine, ethical skills and the use of information systems (such as evidence clinical practice) will be expanded upon that taught in clinical skills 1.

Objectives:

Upon completion clinical skills 2, students should consolidate on knowledge taught in clinical skills 1, and in addition demonstrate competency in the following areas:

Clinical skills and knowledge-

Have appropriate clinical skills for paediatrics – including history taking and examination – to permit sufficient definition of the patient’s problems as a basis for a provisional diagnosis and a provisional management plan.

Be able to organise, synthesise and act on information gained from the child, adolescent or their family and from other sources so as to exhibit sound clinical judgement and decision-making.

Be able to act effectively in paediatric emergency situations.

Understand common investigations, test characteristics and be able to select tests and interpret results for children and adolescents.

Ethical skills and practice-

In all clinical practice with children, the principles of-

Providing best possible care: knowing limitations, keeping up to date.

Not doing harm: treatment, confidentiality and communication, respecting personal and cultural differences, research and trials, consent.

Health systems information and information technology knowledge and skills-

Use information technology to access key information, clinical practice guidelines and evidence based medicine.

Assessment:

End year written exam 70% (3 hours), end year oral exam 30% (30 minutes). Pass/fail hurdle 80% attendance.
