Subject Overview: This subject further develops English language competency in the four macro skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening across a range of academic and professional usages. Topics include developing reading strategies for different purposes, writing for different purposes and audiences, analysing and producing a variety of written and spoken genres, analysing a variety of academic and professional discourses, utilising appropriate academic or professional discourses in written and spoken texts, synthesising information from different sources and managing interpersonal and group interactions.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • understand and use appropriate reading and writing strategies for different purposes;
  • be able to analyse and use a variety of academic and professional genres and discourses;
  • synthesise information from a range of sources;
  • understand the dynamics of interpersonal and group interactions.
Assessment: Written tasks totalling approximately 3,000 words (60 per cent); oral communication tasks totaling approximately 30 minutes (40 per cent).
