Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 5 hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment: 5 contact hours/week , 10 additional hours/week. Total of 15 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Chinese 1A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Overview: This subject is an introductory course in Chinese for students who have completed Chinese 1A . By the conclusion of this subject students should be able to speak with an acceptable standard of pronunciation, and read and write approximately 500 Chinese characters. Students will further develop their listening comprehension and speaking skills and gain further knowledge of Chinese cultural practices.
  • be able to speak with an acceptable standard accent;
  • be able to read and write approximately 500 Chinese characters;
  • be able to recognise the principles of structural organization in a communicative system;
  • be able to conduct a conversation in simple Chinese on a limited number of everyday topics;
  • attain knowledge of cultural practices in another system.
Assessment: Two short tests 20% (one due mid-semester and one at the end of semester), a 1-hour final examination 30% (due during the examination period), regular vocabulary tests 10% (ongoing), a 5-minute oral test 20% (examination period) and a 20-minute listening comprehension test 20% (examination period).
