Subject Overview:

This subject introduces students to a variety of critical methodologies suitable for the engagement in, and analysis of, creative arts. Students will consider the theoretical grounding for an arts culture nexus and consider this relationship from the perspective of important critical, methodologies/contexts such as Marxism, feminism, postmodernism, historicism, postcolonialism, etc. Students will be required to participate in seminar discussions.

Objectives: Students who complete this subject will:
  • understand the processes and techniques associated with research in the creative arts;
  • be able to manage time effectively in the completion of a self-directed research project;
  • demonstrate the written skills to present essay work on an approved topic to an advanced level;
  • be able to access a broad range of resource material, including traditional text and electronic media.
Assessment: Seminar preparation and participation equivalent to 1500 words 35% (due at the end of semester), and a 3500-word essay 65% (due end of semester). There is a hurdle requirement of a minimum of 80% attendance.
