Subject Overview:

Topics include song writing and individual improvisation (using piano and principal instrument); improvisation for movement; and improvisation of soundscapes.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • write original songs with clients in groups and individually;

  • demonstrate basic improvisation techniques using both piano and principal instrument for non-pianists;
  • understand and implement improvisational methods of Nordoff & Robbins, Alvin and Wigram for use in disability settings with child and adult clients

Assessment:

10 weekly online submissions worth 5% each (50%); end of semester audio submission of an original song written for a music therapy context (50%).
