Contact Hours: Intensive subject from 1-16 July: 12 1.5-hour lectures, 8 1-hour tutorials (no tutorial 2,8,12,15 July: 2 2-hour film screenings Thursday 8 July and Thursday 15 July from 1-3pm

Subject Overview:	This subject explores German society, culture and politics from 1933 to 1945, with special emphasis on the origins, development and significance of the Nazi dictatorship. Topics include the post-WWI crisis, the rise of the Nazi movement, Nazi ideology, the collapse of the Weimar Republic, the seizure of power, Adolf Hitler as charismatic leader, the racist character of Nazi society and politics, the position of women, anti-Semitism, "euthanasia," the Holocaust, "Hitler"s" war and the nature of the Nazi empire. Students completing this subject should be able to demonstrate a general knowledge of the cultural, social and political history of Germany between 1933 and 1945. understand the causes, character and consequences of the Nazi movement. and demonstrate familiarity with the major historiographical debates concerning Nazism.
Objectives:	be able to demonstrate a general knowledge of the culture, society and political history of Germany between 1914 and 1945. understand the causes, character, and consequences of the Nazi movement. demonstrate familiarity with the major historiographical debates and the variety if interpretive perspectives concerning Nazism.
Assessment:	A primary source document analysis of 2000 words 50% (due Monday 12 July) and a 2-hour final exam 50% ( Friday 23 July). Hurdle requirement: students must attend a minimum of 75% of tutorials in order to be pass this subject.
