Subject Overview:

This subject will focus on curriculum design and development to support children's language development and emergent literacy practices in early childhood care and education contexts. Topics will include scope and sequence of language and literacy learning in the early childhood years; the multiplicity of literacies; the role of talk in literacy teaching and learning; the central and continuing role of family and caregivers in emergent literacy learning; issues associated with early intervention in the progress of spoken and written language learning in L1 and L2 contexts in the early childhood years; approaches to planning language and literacy programs in early childhood, including immersion models, the language experience approach, and more formal or systematic models found in the early years of school. This subject will include an exploration of national and state curriculum policy and programs, including CSF11 - English, Early Years Literacy, and First Steps.
