Diploma in Informatics

Upon completion of the Diploma in Informatics, students should:

• Be able to demonstrate their understanding of the way information and communication technologies support integration of data from diverse sources;
• Be able to apply modern concepts and techniques to problems involving the acquisition, storage, manipulation, and presentation of data;
• Be able to critically analyse the information flows occurring in real world data sharing situations and be able to design supporting on-line or web-based solutions; and
• Be able to provide informed advice to people in other disciplines about how best to implement on-line or web-based solutions to problems involving the acquisition, storage, manipulation, or presentation of domain-specific data.

The Diploma in Informatics requires a total of 100 points of specified study, of which up to 50 points can be credited from the student’s underlying degree. To graduate with a new generation degree and the Diploma, students must complete between 350 and 400 points across both programs.

To be awarded the Diploma in Informatics students must have completed four compulsory subjects and four Informatics electives.

Pathways

Depending on a student’s individual circumstances and their personal desire, the Diploma may be taken in a variety of “Fast Track” modes or by adding the full 100 points (i.e. one full year) to their degree.

Fast Track modes will involve cross crediting of up to 50 points and/or overloading in one, two or all three years of the course.

All students undertaking a Diploma must complete a minimum of 350 points and a maximum of 400 points for the degree plus the diploma

Students in the BSc majoring in any of Computer Science, Science Informatics, and Software Systems are not be permitted to enrol in the Diploma in Informatics.

Students must complete an additional four subjects (50 points) including at least two subjects (25 points) at third year level from the range of second and third level subjects offered within the following Study Areas:

• Computer Science
• Science Informatics
• Software Systems and
• Information Systems.

In addition the following two subjects may also be taken as electives:

• 600-321 Informatics 4: Web Applications
• 600-320 Informatics 5: Applied Analytics

Individual third year level Informatics electives have various second year level prerequisites that must be fulfilled, and students must consider the second year level prerequisites required for a particular set of third year level electives.

Please note that Informatics 6: eResearch Project will be credit excluded with the capstone subjects provided to the Computer Science, Science Informatics, Software Systems and Information Systems study areas.

All commencing new generation undergraduate degree and commencing BE students may apply to undertake this Diploma. The mode of undertaking the diploma, either Fast Track or by addition of a full year to their degree will depend on each student’s particular circumstances (i.e. the overload policy requires a particular level of performance/achievement be attained for permission to overload).

Students currently enrolled in a new generation undergraduate degree are also eligible to apply to undertake the Diploma.

To be eligible to apply for entry to a Diploma students must have gained admission to and be enrolled in a new generation undergraduate degree or the BE.

Diploma places cannot be deferred.
