Subject Overview:

Vocal and guitar skills in the music therapy context. Basic therapeutic skills for individual and group work.

Objectives:

On the completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • play a repertoire of songs from memory that cover a range of genres;

  • demonstrate ability to sight sing, and transpose melodies at sight; and

  • demonstrate basic guitar techniques used in song work.

They should also have developed skills in:

  • basic counselling techniques;

  • basic group leadership skills based on the work of Yalom; and

  • music therapy group facilitation skills for work in special schools and nursing homes.

Assessment:

Mid-semester practical test (voice 25%; guitar 25%); 1500-word assignment due end-of-semester (50%).
