Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of development studies and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in development studies.

Objectives:

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma will:

  • understand current practice and thinking about development;
  • comprehend the relations between development and environmental conditions, gender and urbanisation;
  • know and be able to use some of the techniques employed in development planning.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • Thesis 15,000 words (50 points)
  • 3 compulsory subjects (37.5 points)
  • 1 elective subject (12.5 points)

Entry Requirements: 1. The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant's ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criteria -

• an undergraduate degree with at least 50 credit points at second or third year level in a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) in these subjects , or equivalent; or
• a Graduate Diploma in a relevant area of study with a grade average of at least H2B, or equivalent; or
• a Graduate Certificate in a relevant area of study with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) and at least one year of full time documented relevant work experience, or equivalent.

2. The Selection Committee may conduct interviews or tests and may call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
