The School of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science offers first-year chemistry, which may be taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Chemistry studies the structure and properties of matter; that is, it deals with atoms and molecules, how they react when combined, and identifies the energy changes during chemical reactions. When studied at the University of Melbourne, the role of chemistry in society and the physical environment is also discussed. First-year chemistry subjects cover areas such as atomic structure; the biosphere, geosphere and atmosphere; acids and bases; chemistry of metals; the molecules of life. Teaching involves lectures, tutorials and practical experiments and is complemented by a series of self-paced, interactive, computer-aided learning packages.
The 610-142 chemistry stream requires a sound knowledge of Year 12 Chemistry. 610-171 Fundamentals of Chemistry is designed for students who have not completed Year 12 Chemistry. The subject does, however, assume some knowledge of chemistry and basic principles.
