Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 1 two-hour rehearsal per week

Prerequisites:

No prior experience is required on the viol but students will be expected to devote at least 4 hours per week to individual practice.

Subject Overview:

This ensemble provides the opportunity for both experienced string players as well as students with no prior experience of stringed instruments. The consort uses treble, tenor and bass viols from the Faculty collection and is often divided into groups based on level and experience. The consort performs dance music of the 16th and 17th centuries, and also combines with other ensembles for performances.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:
  • show technical development as ensemble musicians
  • participate with ability and self-confidence as a team member of a performing group
  • perform selected repertoire to concert standard
  • identify and exhibit specific knowledge of a range of ensemble repertoire
  • exhibit an informed respect for the values and principles of ensemble performance.
Assessment:

Attendance and active participation in all rehearsals and classes (50%); participation in performances as directed (50%)

Less than 80% attendance will result in a fail.
