Objectives:

A candidate who has successfully completed the subject should:

  • Understand the essential provisions of the following agreements:
    • Host government contracts and underlying petroleum law
    • Confidentiality agreements
    • Joint study and bid agreements
    • Exploration and farmout agreements
    • Joint operating agreements
    • Unitisation agreements
    • Lifting, crude oil sales and gas sales contracts
    • Seismic, drilling and well-service agreements
    • Dispute resolution provisions
  • Understand how to manage and contract to avoid corruption problems.

Syllabus:

Principal topics will include:

  • Overview of agreements, confidentiality agreements
  • Joint study and bid group agreements, joint operating and related agreements
  • Unitisation agreements and exploration and farmout agreements
  • Allocating risk in oilfield service contracts, managing and contracting to avoid corruption problems, crude oil sales and related agreements
  • Gas sales and related agreements
  • Dispute resolution in the petroleum sector.
Assessment:
  • Take-home examination (100%) (11-14 July)
