This subject explores a range of social theories and methodologies which have influenced the writing of history since the Enlightenment, including empiricism, Marxism, cultural history, postcolonialism, feminism and poststructuralism. The subject also examines the task of writing history; the archival and bibliographical practices upon which history writing is based; and the creative act of transforming historical sources into interpretative narratives to communicate to others. Students should encounter knowledges, skills and practices which provide a valuable basis for independent critical inquiry and research-based writing.
|Assessment:||For 3rd year students: a theory essay of 2000 words 45% (due during the semester), an essay of 2000 words 45% (due at the end of semester) and tutorial participation 10%. For 4th year students: a theory essay of 2500 words 45% (due during the semester), an essay of 2500 words 45% (due at the end of semester) and tutorial participation 10%.|
