Subject Overview:

This subject will introduce students to the principles of groundwater flow in aquifer systems, how we use groundwater resources, and processes by which these resources are protected, contaminated and restored. Topics covered include: an introduction to how groundwater flows in steady state and transient environments; controls on groundwater quality; principles of contaminant movement and transformation in groundwater; and prevention, management and remedial strategies to minimise the potential impacts of human activities. After taking this subject, students should have an understanding of the basic principles of groundwater flow, how groundwater quality can be affected, sources and chemical behaviour of common contaminants in groundwater, and the management and clean-up of contaminated groundwater.

Assessment: Four practical assignments totalling up to 3000 words due during the semester (total 40% - individual weighting of each assignment is announced in the first week of class); a 2-hour written examination in the examination period (60%).

Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.
Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available.
2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October.
