Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 24 lectures (two a week) and 10 hours tutorial or practical work

Subject Overview:

The following topics will be considered: the structure and function of the main sensory systems and the motor systems; complex functions such as thought, emotion, motivation, memory and the disorders of thought and mood.

Students will acquire an understanding of the major questions in neuroscience and the experimental tools that are being used to address them; develop written communication skills; and develop a capacity for independent critical thought, rational enquiry and self-directed learning.

Assessment: A 30-minute written class test held mid-semester (20%); a 2-hour written examination during the examination period (80%).
Prescribed Texts: Principles of Neural Science (Kandel, Schwartz and Jessell), 4th ed
Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.
Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available.
2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October.
