Subject Overview:

This subject is designed to introduce the student to the theory and practice of teaching and learning in the tertiary sector. This portfolio is directed towards building knowledge and skills in methods of education and educational theories. In conjunction with the portfolio co-ordinator, students are required to organise a placement or learning activity that will meet the objectives and learning outcomes set out in the learning contract form. Students will also be given an opportunity to participate in appropriate teaching sessions within the School of Physiotherapy.

Assessment: A piece of written work, 5,000 words, that is informed by the teaching and learning placement objectives and experience, due end of semester (80%). This work may comprise a review of literature underpinning the area of educational practice; or a review of the empirical evidence supporting the educational practice; ora critical analysis of the educational theory/s underpinning the educational practice One of the following, due end of semester, (20%)Class presentation (case study from educational portfolio); orProduction of educational guidelines or strategies; orDevelopment of a component of the educational curriculum relevant to physiotherapy practice (1,000 words)

This subject aims to provide:

  • An increased understanding of theories of learning
  • An opportunity to develop learning materials for a designated class
  • Teaching experience in conjunction with a review of educational theory

On completion of this subject, students will have developed the following generic skills:

  • Abilities in goal setting, self-evaluation and reflective practice
